University profile In contrast with other Ivy League member universities, Brown University aims to be a place for pure academic study and research and therefore it has not created a business school or law school. Keio University has a historically strong connection with Brown University. On the recommendation of John Manjiro, Yukichi Fukuzawa studied the Western higher education system at Brown University, and it is said that this is what inspired him to found Keio University. The Brown University President at the time, the economist Francis Wayland, had a profound influence on Yukichi Fukuzawa and there is even a famous anecdote that Yukichi Fukuzawa continued to give a lecture about an english language text by Francis Wayland despite the fact that the Boshin War was raging outside his classroom window. To commemorate this, Keio University celebrates May 15 as 'Yukichi Fukuzawa-Francis Wayland Memorial Lecture Day'.
