University profile | Rice University is a private university located in Houston, Texas. Established in 1912, Rice is a top research institution and is dedicated to the "advancement of letters, science, and art." With an undergraduate population of about 3,900 students and a small student-to-faculty ratio, students are able to have more personal interactions with professors. In 2018, the U.S. News & World Report ranked Rice 14th(tie) among national universities. Rice University is well known for its applied science program, and a strong emphasis is placed on arts and sciences. Additionally, it is adjacent to the Texas Medical Center, the largest medical center in the world, and the campus encompasses nearly 300 acres. Houston is a growing city and is ranked the fourth most populous city in the United States.
