as of June 29, 2021

Thank you for your interest in the MEXT Scholarship and Keio University. Applicants who wish to enroll in Keio University through the Japanese Government Scholarship scheme should read the following information.

After your application arrives at Keio University, it may take up to three weeks or more for you to receive the results. So it is highly recommended that you give yourself plenty of time.

Summer holiday:
Keio University will be closed from July 31 to August 9 due to the summer holiday. Please be aware that we cannot reply to your e-mails or calls during this period. Most professors are away from the end of July through the middle of September, so we may not be able to make contact with them during this time.

2. Supervisor

(1) Choose your preferred supervisor at Keio University, referring to the website below.

      [Keio University Faculty Profile Links]

★Tips for searching for a supervisor:

We recommend consulting your current university supervisor and have him/her introduce you to a suitable Keio professor. You may also find it helpful to review academic journals or other publically available resources.

Please be aware that MEXT Scholarship Coordinator will not introduce any KEIO Professors to you.

★Language requirements:

Please note that Keio University has degree programs taught in English only at the Graduate Schools of Economics,Medicine, Science and Technology , Media and Governance ,System Design and Management , Media Design , and Law School LL.M. in Global Legal Practice . Applicants who seek to obtain a degree at another Keio University graduate school are required to have native-level Japanese ability, since the entrance examination and all the courses are conducted in Japanese. If deemed necessary, MEXT can provide a 6-month preparatory Japanese language course during the first 6-month period after your arrival, however, that may not be enough to prepare for the entrance examination if you are a Japanese beginner. Please discuss your plans with your supervisor or academic advisor well in advance, including whether you will require a full-time preparatory Japanese language course.

Note:  To Applicants for Graduate School of Business Administration (KBS)
At KBS, degree programs are basically conducted in Japanese. Since our programs are discussion-based, students will be required to have high language proficiency in Japanese. More specifically, students whose native language is not Japanese must have at least JLPT N1 to join discussion in class.

(2) Contact your preferred supervisor by e-mail and obtain his/her informal acceptance to supervise you.

Applicants must describe their research plans in detail to their chosen professor to make sure he/she is able to supervise research in that field and that the research plan is acceptable. Please contact your preferred supervisor as early as possible as there may be circumstance that prevent them from being able to supervise research, including retirement, overseas research, sabbatical leave, incompatibility of research topic, etc.

*Do not request a "Letter of Acceptance" to your preferred supervisor, since they are not in charge of issuing these.

4. Notification of Results

Successful applicants will receive a Letter of Acceptance from Keio University, which they must report to the Japanese diplomatic mission.

After screening your documents, MEXT Scholarship Coordinators will contact the graduate school or professor based on your Information Form regarding whether they will provisionally accept the applicant. A Letter of Acceptance (PDF) will be sent to the e-mail. Please note that Keio University does not guarantee that a letter will be issued to every applicant. In the event the letter cannot be issued, the MEXT Scholarship Coordinator will inform the applicant through the e-mail adress given in the "Information Form".

5. Second Screening and University Placement.

MEXT determines university placement. Neither the applicant nor Keio University has authority to make this decision or influence its outcome. Additionally, a Letter of Acceptance does not guarantee an assignment to Keio University.

* Entrance to a Master's / Doctoral program *
We strongly recommend carefully reading the application guide of the graduate school you would like to enroll in before coming to Japan. This is because some graduate schools require you to submit a "Certificate of Graduation" issued within three months before the deadline of the graduate school application, an original copy of your TOFEL score, etc. It will be much easier for you to prepare them before coming to Japan.

Information on admission is available online on either the Keio University website admissions page or Keio University Graduate Schools Admissions page.
