 (*1) Apologies Across Cultures
   With the rapid advance of globalization, productive intercultural communication between various nations, groups, and individuals has become increasingly important. During this workshop, we will look from a variety of perspectives at examples of misunderstandings that can arise from intercultural communication. Participants will deepen their engagement with the examples raised by making presentations and discussing possible causes of intercultural friction. The topic of this workshop will be “Apology” in different cultures. The focus of the workshop will be on encouraging participants to acquire intercultural intellectual flexibility by thinking independently, brainstorming and trying out solutions, and considering a variety of perspectives.  (*2) Border Crossing and Japanese Society
   While Japan is often depicted as a homogeneous country, it is increasingly becoming diverse in terms of race, ethnicity, religion, language, class, among other dimensions of identity. Specifically, there is a rapid increase in the number of ‘foreigners,’ including immigrants referred to as ‘oldcomers,’ ‘newcomers,’ and refugees residing in Japan. In this class, we will discuss what constructs Japaneseness and attempt to reimagine Japan, Japanese culture, and the Japanese. (Tomoko TOKUNAGA, Project Assistant Professor, International Center)
