University profile Founded in 1963, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) is a forward-looking comprehensive research university with a global vision and a mission to combine tradition with modernity, and to bring together China and the West. Our eight Faculties offer a wide array of excellent undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. CUHK is a bilingual university. English, Cantonese, and Putonghua are used for instruction.There are many courses that use English as a medium of instruction while some courses are given in Cantonese/Putonghua.
Undergraduate programs open to exchange students Exchange students can take most courses offered by the faculties of Arts, Business Administration, Engineering, Science, and Social Science, where they meet the prerequisites and language proficiency requirements.
Undergraduate programs NOT open to exchange students
• Faculty of Medicine courses, except some public health courses
• Faculty of Education courses, except some sports science and physical education (SPED) courses taught in English, and physical education (PHED) courses with an X after the course number
• Student-orientated teaching (STOT) courses
• Courses under the MSc in Advanced Environmental Planning Technologies and MSc in Housing Studies programmes
 • Courses under the MSc in Finance, MSc in Management and MSc in Marketing programmes, except students from the exchange partner schools of these programmes, who can take specified courses
• MEDN courses under the Biology programme in the School of Life Sciences • Courses in the undergraduate and postgraduate design studios, except for students from the School of Architecture's exchange-partner schools.
 
* Business courses at CUHK are extremely popular and competitive.
* Law courses are only available to students who major in Law.(students must have achieved law courses at their home university with their grade C or above, or the equivalent, without failing any courses. They also need evidence of the necessary English proficiency: TOEFL iBT 100 or IELTS 7.0)

Dormitory information Exchange students will live in on-campus housing. CUHK is the only university in Hong Kong with a college system and exchange student will be automatically assigned to rooms in college managed hostels with local roommate (see http://www.oal.cuhk.edu.hk/getting_started/ for details).
Other information
Chinese Language Courses
The Yale-in-China Chinese Language Center (CLC) offers Cantonese and Putonghua courses at the elementary, intermediate, and advanced levels. Most undergraduates can take a maximum of 6 units of courses (2 courses) in each semester without paying fees. CLC courses are centralized and recognized by CUHK. Results of CLC courses will also be shown on the student transcripts.
 
Health facilities on campus
The University Health Service offers basic outpatient health care to all students, including exchange students.
