Last update: May 1, 2018
Thank you for your interest in the MEXT Scholarship and Keio University. Applicants who wish to enroll in Keio University through the Japanese Government Scholarship scheme should read the following information.
After your application arrives at Keio University, it may take up to three weeks or more for you to receive the results as professors may be away during the summer holiday.
Keio University will be closed from August 10 to August 16 due to the summer holidy. Please be aware that we cannot reply to your e-mails or calls during this period. Most professors are away from the end of July through the middle of September, so we may not be able to make contact with them during this time.
1. Application Procedure
Applicants must pass the First Screening conducted by the Japanese Embassy / Consulate General in their country. For further information, please see the guidelines for Monbukagakusho Scholarship applicants.
(1) Choose your preferred supervisor at Keio University, referring to the website below.
★Tips for searching for a supervisor:
We recommend consulting your current university supervisor and have him/her introduce you to a suitable Keio professor. You may also find it helpful to review academic journals or other publically available resources.
Please be aware that MEXT Scholarship Coordinator will not introduce any KEIO Professors to you.
Please note that Keio University has degree programs taught in English only at the Graduate Schools of Economics,Medicine, Science and Technology , Media and Governance ,System Design and Management , Media Design , and Law School LL.M. in Global Legal Practice . Applicants who seek to obtain a degree at another Keio University graduate school are required to have native-level Japanese ability, since the entrance examination and all the courses are conducted in Japanese. If deemed necessary, MEXT can provide a 6-month preparatory Japanese language course during the first 6-month period after your arrival, however, that may not be enough to prepare for the entrance examination if you are a Japanese beginner. Please discuss your plans with your supervisor or academic advisor well in advance, including whether you will require a full-time preparatory Japanese language course.
(2) Contact your preferred supervisor by e-mail and obtain his/her informal acceptance to supervise you.
Applicants must describe their research plans in detail to their chosen professor to make sure he/she is able to supervise research in that field and that the research plan is acceptable. Please contact your preferred supervisor as early as possible as there may be circumstance that prevent them from being able to supervise research, including retirement, overseas research, sabbatical leave, incompatibility of research topic, etc.
*Do not request a "Letter of Acceptance" from your preferred supervisor, since they are not in charge of issuing these.
