1. Medical Care System* Assistance with Medical Expenses for International students by JASSO (at International Center) will end on 31 March 2009. Applications will no longer be processed, as of April. Application Deadline 27/ Feb./2009 (Friday) You have two types of medical care systems available if you hold a "College Student" visa: National Health Insurance (a discount scheme) and the JASSO (Japan Student Service Organization) Medical Care Assistance (a reimbursement scheme). Below is an example of how a JPY10,000 medical treatment cost may be paid:
A.Medical assistance to be reimbursed from JASSO (35% of your payment using National Health Insurance) B.Total amount you have to pay if both the National Health Insurance and the JASSO medical Care Assistance are applied. 2. National Health InsuranceNational Health Insurance is the medical insurance system designed to distribute medical expenses between the state and patients. Foreigners who have been in Japan for more than one year are required to join the National Health Insurance scheme. Registration can be completed at the National Health Insurance Section at the ward/city office of your residence. For registration, you must present you Alien Registration Card. You will be issued a Health Insurance Card (a thin booklet: Kenko Hoken Sho) after the registration procedure is completed. National Health Insurance will cover 70% of medical charges, and you must pay for the other 30%. Some items are not covered, including general health check-ups and cosmetic surgery. The monthly premium of the National Health Insurance is about \4,000 (the fee differs by residential district). National Health Insurance is advantageous if you become seriously ill or need to be hospitalized. Medical expenses for those with families can be greatly reduced by joining this plan. A 50-70% discount may be available if you are not a wage earner. For the exact amount of the premium, and the method of payment, please inquire at the National Health Insurance Section of your ward/city office. Whenever you need medical care, you must show your Health Insurance Certificate to the hospital receptionist or the doctor. If your name, the household or the address changes, you are required to report the change to the National Health Insurance Section of your ward/city office within 14 days. You are also required to return your Health Insurance Card to the National Health Insurance Section when you leave Japan. 3. The JASSO Medical Care AssistanceThis is a scheme provided by the JASSO. After you receive medical treatment for illness or physical injury sustained in Japan, you will be reimbursed, in principle, 35% (in the 2006 academic year) of the medical fee by the JASSO under this assistance scheme. Only the student with "College Student" visa applies for this assistance from the JASSO (no charge). Please note, however, your purchase of the National Health Insurance is a prerequisite to be eligible to receive JASSO Medical Care Assistance. All procedures regarding this assistance must be made at the office of the International Center. (1) How to Claim Reimbursement of Medical FeesDocuments for claim: 1 .Receipt of the medical bill 2. Health Insurance Card (Kenko Hoken Sho) 3. Bankbook 4. Student ID Card
Please note the following things listed below. 1. When you apply for the first time, please bring your bankbook. 2. Please make a claim for the total medical bill at the end of the month in which you receive medical treatment. A claim is conducted once a month. Please note that eimbursement may not be possible if the claim is delayed for a long time. 3. The subsidy for the reimbursement will be transferred to your bank account after about 1 month. (Additional time may be requested.) 4. You cannot apply for this assistance when you lose your "College Student" resident status or when you leave Keio University. 5. If the monthly medical expenses for your treatment exceed the criteria, expenses will be reimbursed by the National Health Insurance. If this system is applicable to your case, you will receive a notice from the National Health Insurance Section of your ward/city office within about 2-3 months after the treatment. For more detailed information, please inquire at the National Health Insurance Section of your ward/city office. (2) Application for Medical Care Assistance![]() Disaster and Accident Insurance for Students Keio University is a supporting member of a group disaster and accident insurance plan for the students, which provides compensation to students in the event of injuries caused by unexpected disasters or accidents during education and research activities. Keio University will bear the annual insurance premium for all the full-time students of Keio University. "During education and research activities" means: (1) during curricular activities, (2) during school events, and (3) during university-affiliated extracurricular activities that take place off school premises. If you are injured during education and research activities mentioned above, please notify the office of the International Center immediately. 4. List of Hospitals with English-Speaking StaffPlease note that the hospitals on the list below may not have English-speaking staff on duty all the time. Therefore, please check with the hospital before you go see a doctor.
