University profile William Marsh Rice University is a private university located in Houston, Texas. Established in 1912, Rice is a top research institution and is dedicated to the "advancement of letters, science, and art." With an undergraduate population of about 3,800 students and a small student-to-faculty ratio, students are able to have more personal interactions with professors. In 2012, the U.S. News & World Report ranked Rice 17th among national universities and the Princeton Review ranked Rice 1st for "Best Quality of Life" and "Happiest Students." Rice University is well known for its applied science program, and a strong emphasis is placed on arts and sciences. Rice attracts a diverse group of highly talented students with a range of academic studies that includes humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, engineering, architecture, music, and business management. Rice is located in the heart of the Houston Museum District. Additionally, it is adjacent to the Texas Medical Center, the largest medical center in the world, and the campus encompasses nearly 300 acres. Houston is a growing city and is ranked the fourth most populous city in the United States. Houston is also considered a global city, with very diverse residents from various ethnic and religious backgrounds.
Undergraduate programs open to exchange students Exchange students must be enrolled in and complete 12 credit hours in order to maintain their J-1 visa status. Exchange students have the ability to take courses in four of Rice's academic schools: George R. Brown School of Engineering, School of Humanities, Wiess School of Natural Sciences, and School of Social Sciences.
