University profile Illinois Wesleyan University (IWU), an independent, residential, liberal arts university founded in 1850, strives to attain the ideal of a liberal education while providing unique opportunities with its distinctive curricula and programs. With an undergraduate student population of 2,000, the university offers a tightly knit, supportive community and a variety of opportunities for close interaction with excellent faculty. IWU maintains a faculty-to-student ratio of 1 to 11 and average class size of 17 students. Special emphasis is placed on developing each student's critical thinking and communication skills, cultural literacy and global awareness. The University comprises a College of Liberal Arts; a College of Fine Arts with Schools of Art, Theatre and Music; and a School of Nursing. IWU offers over 40 major courses of study, as well as 8 pre-professional programs (such as pre-medical studies and pre-law) and 5 professional programs in music, art theatre, nursing and business.
