University profile Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg has a history of more than 500 years. As a traditional German university, the full spectrum of academic specialties, ranging from philosophy to engineering, is available at Halle. Therefore, studying at Halle is attractive for students from all Keio campusses, in particular Hiyoshi, Mita, and SFC. Historically, many prominent Japanese personalities have studied or received doctoral degrees at Halle University, for example Inazo Nitobe. The first Japanese student at Halle from Keio University was Kanbe Torajiro, who studied law at Halle around 1900. The exchange program with Keio University offers Keio students enrolling at Halle scholarships to cover the expenses of daily life (about EUR 300/month; depending on receival of grant in 2016/2017), accommodation in student dormitories and support in their studies through specially trained and experienced tutors.
